Building Permits

Application Process
Building permits for townships zoned by the county are issued through the Tax Equalization Office. To get a building permit you will need to submit the following:
  • A completed permit application
  • Blueprints of the structure or structures
  • Plot plan of the lot area showing the location of the structure and the set backs from the lot lines
  • First District Health Unit approval for sewer and water if not hooking to municipal service.
  • Contractor's name and license number; this includes carpenters, cement, plumbing, heating, electrical, excavating contractors, etc.
  • Legal description of the property and a copy of the plat
  • Property address
  • A surveyors stamped certification of soil elevation floodplain
  • All living areas of a building in the floodplain, must be 1 foot above the flood elevation
  • For variances and special use permit applications approval will be required from the Ward County Planning Commission which  conducts public hearing meetings on the third Thursday of every month
  • Fees for a building and alteration permits are $4.50 per $1,000 of the estimated construction costs
